Mail system update this weekend

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

As everyone has noticed, agora’s been heavily loaded with the spam influx this fall, and it’s causing things to break here and there. I’m going to have to throw in a new system kinda on the fly this weekend to get things back under control. There may be some teething problems as a result, but I should be able to get any kinks worked out by the end of the weekend, hopefully sooner. The change will be to direct rdrop.com (and other domains hosted here) mail to another system for spam filtering, and then have agora only accept mail from the spam filter system.

This means, if you’re not using a command line mail program on agora, or webmail, you need to make sure that your Outgoing Server is set to use vmail.rdrop.com. Until now, that’s been optional, but that will no longer be the case. Sorry for the short notice, but it’s the only chance I’m going to have to do it until next year, and I’m not sure things will hold together that long if I don’t…

I’ll try to get the docs updated accordingly, but in the meantime, just replace smtp.rdrop.com with vmail.rdrop.com as appropriate, and they should work ok as is.

Of course, if any questions, please use the support request form.

Mail performance

Around labor day, the spammers went into overtime, and ever since, the antiquated spam filtering system on agora hasn’t been keeping up well.  I’ve been trying to get time to work on a new system with all the bells and whistles, but it’s a big task, and I’ve run into a problem I don’t know how to work around yet.

So, it’s time for Plan B: I’ve got it worked out how to build a much simpler, less fancy spam filter front end that should solve the problem.  Unfortunately, with a conference to go to this week and Thanksgiving next week, it’s still going to be a little bit before I can get it implemented.  It shouldn’t be much longer though — even with the traveling, I should be able to find time to work on it some, and should be able to bring it up by early December.  Hang in there just a little longer!
